Editing DNS records in the panel

Editing DNS records in the panel

If a domain uses CloudWeb's nameservers (see DNS records: what they are and how they work), you manage its DNS zone directly in the panel.

Where to find records

In the left-hand menu, click Domains and open a specific domain. The DNS Records card on the domain's detail page lists every record for that domain and lets you add, edit and delete them. There is also a combined DNS Records page listing records across all your domains – it is mainly for an overview and quickly adding a record; editing an individual record takes you back to that domain's detail page.

Adding a record

The Add Record button opens a form where you choose:

  • Record Type – A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS and SRV are offered
  • Name – @ for the root domain, or a subdomain (e.g. blog); leaving it blank uses @
  • Value – the record's content (an IP address, a target domain, or text, depending on the type)
  • TTL – in seconds, 3600 by default. It must be at least 300 seconds (5 minutes) and at most 86,400 seconds (24 hours); a value outside that range is not saved.
  • Priority – required for MX and SRV types

You edit an existing record directly in its row on the domain's detail page via the pencil icon – confirm the change with the checkmark.

The CNAME rule

A CNAME record cannot exist alongside any other record for the same name. If you try to add, say, an A record for a name that already has a CNAME (or the other way round), the system rejects it. If you need more than one thing for a single name, use a type other than CNAME (TXT next to MX, for instance, works fine).

Records you cannot edit

Some records are managed automatically by the system and are shown as locked in the panel:

  • the zone's SOA record
  • the root domain's NS records (the zone's own nameservers) – they cannot be deleted; other NS records can
  • DNSSEC-related records (DS, DNSKEY and the derived CDS/CDNSKEY) – these are managed by the DNSSEC toggle, see DNSSEC

Tools

The Tools menu on the domain's detail page offers:

  • Auto Add Defaults – automatically fills in the standard set of records for the server the domain's hosting runs on (only available when the domain has a hosting)
  • Verify Nameservers – checks whether the domain currently uses CloudWeb's nameservers
  • Fetch DNS Records – reads the domain's current records from external DNS servers

Automatic mail DNS setup

On a hosting's e-mail page there is a Setup Mail DNS button that automatically adds the records e-mail needs (an MX record and related TXT records) to the domain's zone. If the domain's DNS is not hosted at CloudWeb (for example, it runs at another provider), the panel instead offers the records to copy in by hand – see Domain registered elsewhere.

Record status

The combined DNS Records page shows each record as Active or Inactive – an inactive record exists in the database but is not served in the zone.
